"W" is the only letter in the English alphabet that is pronounced with more than one syllable and it is very difficult to make abbreviations or shorten anything with the letter "W" in it. For example; It is easier to say "World Wide Web" than "Double u double u double u". It's inconvenient and not that hard to change. Canada pronounces their word for "Z" differently than us so it shouldn't be that painful to change a simple pronunciation for a word for a letter in our alphabet.
