In 1975 it was signed into law that we would work towards converting to the metric system. That law has not been repealed, but the agencies to get done no longer exist. When it comes to the realm of science especially physics, metric is easier to work with than the imperial units we use today. We would also be on the same page as most other countries for our measurement units, and our citizens traveling abroad and foreigners visiting here wouldn't have to adjust to a different system.
