Since 1996, 18 states & DC have passed laws legalizing cannabis for medical use, and two states have legalized personal use. Recent polls show that approximately 86% of Americans believe its medical use should be legal, and 56% support legal recreational use. Many well-known medical, legal and civil rights organizations support one or both of these positions, as do many individuals with international standing, including former President Jimmy Carter. In spite of this, the appointed leaders of these two agencies continue to hold to outdated positions and prejudices out of touch with medicine, science or, most importantly, the will of the American people. We can't have a "national conversation" on this crucial issue while Ms. Leonhart & Mr. Kerlikowske are in a position to stifle it.
