The Justice Department secretly gathered the telephone records of associated press reporters for a 2 month period investigating a leak from the.government. The government should follow open legal channels to ask for such records. If people in the government who see wrongdoing want to report it to the press, they may think twice if the government can secretly monitor their communication. This would me the public would not learn about government misconduct. There is also the issue of the right to free speech in the constitution, which the secret monitoring could suppress.
