Recently, Michael P. Barrett, the current Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps stated that cutting military pay and benefits will build better discipline among his Marines. As a former Marine and a combat veteran, I find his remarks reprehensible and crass. Ultimately, it will hurt Marines and their families. At the lower enlisted ranks, pay is already meager, especially given what these men and women do for our nation. Therefore, I call for Michael P. Barrett to be removed from his post as Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps for neglecting the welfare of his troops and their dependents.
