Enhanced drivers license system is used in many Border States as a quick and easy way for border crossing without passport checks thus speeding up the lines. When you obtain an enhanced drivers license your information is sent to Homeland Security for a check and file photo. This system could be used on a national level to perform FBI, ATF, State, and Homeland Security background checks for firearms purchase in an instant. This would also allow the ATF to monitor for status changes in real time and not just when a firearm is purchased. Now the sell to the NRA would be that this system would allow handgun purchase across state lines as the background check would be federal jurisdiction and standardized in all states. Make the private transfer of firearms be done by the local county Sheriff.
