Fix the Alternative Minimum Tax for real

Created by M.K. on May 17, 2013

The original intent of the Alternative Minimum Tax was to ensure that the most wealthy taxpayers could not avoid paying taxes altogether. It has failed in that mission, and become something else entirely. The AMT creates a significant marriage penalty and places an undue burden on couples with multiple children. It has become such a boon to the federal budget that the government won't fix this regressive tax. The single biggest victims of the AMT are married couples with multiple kids who earn less than $200,000 and live in a high income tax state like New Jersey or New York. This is not who the AMT was designed to ensnare. And the issue goes beyond linking the brackets to inflation. Raise rates to appropriate levels, and do away with the AMT.
