Our fuel economy testing standards as mandated by the EPA are not similar, in any way shape or form, to the common types of trips undertaken by Americans.
The average speed of "highway" driving per the EPA testing standards is 48.3mph per the fueleconomy.gov website.
Many modern drivers travel at 65-75 miles per hour on the way to work. This should be accounted for by a third column or display on the vehicle's sticker that defines how the vehicle performs in a higher speed environment, or endurance performance at speed.
By updating the test standards to modern travel realities, and requiring the vehicle displays to reflect it, it will encourage vehicle manufacturers to adjust their vehicle gear ratios to take advantage of higher speeds, reducing our nation's fuel consumption.
