The debate is raging over the so-called "fiscal cliff", and negotiations include putting desperately needed social programs at risk. Here's a VERY simple solution:
The U.S. is spending $711 BILLION per year on the military. The next highest spender is China, at merely $143 billion per year. We spend 41% of the ENTIRE WORLD'S MILITARY BUDGET!
Even if we were to cut that in HALF, we'd STILL be paying more than China, Russia, The United Kingdom, and France... COMBINED!
We do not need to spend that much on military. Period. Keep veterans' benefits, but cut military spending by 25-50%. We'll be fine.
Eliminate the Bush-era tax cuts on the rich, keep tax cuts for incomes below $250 thousand, keep Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, and all the social programs the poor need.
