FAFSA is meant to help those in need pay for college, but there is major flaws with this system that need to be fixed. The biggest issue with FAFSA is that under the age of 24 a person must apply as a dependent student, and it takes both student and parent incomes to decide if there is need. A person is legally an adult by age 18, parents no longer need to care for them and many children with not so great home life's leave at this age. So why for the 6 years till that person turns 24 does the government assume they are being cared for by their parents? It is flaws like this that often stop young people from trying to better their life by going to college, telling a person who is struggling to get by they have no financial need because their parents have money is simply unjust.
