Organizations such as Reading is Fundamental (RIF) & Reach out & Read (ROR) have previously been funded by the federal government. This year these organizations did not receive any funding.
Both of these programs & others target children in underfunded school districts & low income areas to provide children with the guidance & ability to learn.
RIF provides new, free books for children to choose from & make their own. ROR promotes early literacy & school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children & advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud.
Nearly two-thirds of low-income families in the U.S. own no books.
These programs make a difference & should receive funding & attention. Lets change how our nation's families value education.
