Canada currently allows private citizens to sponsor refugees - these sponsorships include the charitable donations of Canadians in the support of these sponsored refugees. The United States had a similar policy until the 1980s (when it was discontinued). As the Obama administration has argued that taking in refugees is an expensive endeavour that is limited by the federal budget, I propose that it bring back the private sponsorship of refugees to augment those efforts. Americans are a generous people, and our generosity through philanthropy will surely boost the number of refugees who will find a home here - a home away from strife with an opportunity for prosperity. There also is no better way to build community support for refugees than through voluntary private sponsorship.
