Recombinant bovine growth hormone and recombinant bovine somatotropin, a synthetic version of bovine growth hormone, can be found in nonorganic dairy products unless noted on the packaging.
These growth hormones are allowed in cows milk, which has warranted concerns to public health. There are conflicting studies which potentially show that bovine growth hormone could contribute to infertility, and is labeled as a carcinogen in California.
Furthermore, to the American Dairy farmer, the increases in milk production has decreased the cost, and individual farmers are having trouble competing with larger corporations.
