This petition is directed at changing the scheduling of cannabis from a Schedule I drug to a more appropriate scheduling, based on what 21st century facts dictate.
Cannabis, a plant "prohibited" since the 1930s, was once used for several ailments in America and around the world. In fact up until the 1940s, cannabis and extracts thereof were noted in global Pharmacopoeias for more than a century, including processing and dosing instructions.
As of 2014, it has been proven that cannabinoids, the medicinal compounds found in cannabis, have multiple benefits to the human body, including causing apoptosis, which is the death of a cancer cell.
A Schedule I drug has "no medicinal use" and "high potential for abuse" yet multiple patents on cannabinoids exist worldwide. It is time for change.
