Due to the large number of medical malpractice suits brought against healthcare professionals every year, for the average doctors in most states, liability insurance runs from $10,000 to $40,000 per year and can reach as high as $200,000. This overhead is then passed on to insurance companies who pay for operations and ultimately to the patient in the form of costly insurance.
Thus, we believe that all citizens who will be enjoying universal public coverage, but will not pay into the program, should not contribute to making private insurance more expensive for their fellow citizens and should thus be banned from initiating medical malpractice cases. However, their right to bring criminal charges against truly negligent doctors and petition for loss of medical licenses will remain intact.
