U.S. Sentators Wyden and Udall have informed the public that the Department of Justice has a "secret interpretation" of the Patriot Act which grants the DOJ much broader powers to gather information about lawful citizens than most members of Congress and the public believe the Patriot Act actually grants. The Department of Justice has refused a Freedom of Information Act request to disclose this secret interpretation of the Patriot Act. It has been suggested by Senators Wyden and Udall that the interpretation is so broad that it might as well be an entirely different law. The President should protect our Fourth Amendment rights and prevent the DOJ from making up its own, secret laws by forcing the DOJ to reveal its interpretation of the Patriot Act.
