Millions of gay men want to donate their healthy blood in order to save lives.
The current policy from the FDA is to permanently ban any male blood donor who has had sex with another man from 1977 to present day. This is extremely outdated coming from a time of the AIDS crisis.
Many organizations have supported a reduction in the deferral (ban) time of men who have sex with other men including:
American Association of Blood Banks
American Red Cross
Washington DC City Council
Many countries including the UK have changed the lifetime ban to one year.
One model in 2006 suggested that a change in the ban time from lifetime to one year would result in one additional case of HIV transmitted by transfusion every 32.8 years.
The risk far outweighs the reward. Change the gay blood ban! Save Lives!
