We the people ask the federal government to Call on Congress to act on an issue:

Force major companies to increase their data security BEFORE they are hacked - penalize companies who fail more severely

Created by P.Q. on August 19, 2016

Once all of your personal information is scattered across the internet, it's too late. Large companies think they only need to offer free credit monitoring and promise to examine their security systems so it won't happen again.

In a June, 2016 hack of Banner Health, not only were the usual birth dates and social security numbers compromised but also vast amounts of personal health data. Their solution was to offer credit and identity monitoring and "further enhance the security of our systems to help prevent something like this from happening again."

Companies need to upgrade their data security BEFORE they are hacked. Money talks and by establishing a severe penalty system for data breaches, companies will be more compelled to preemptively upgrade their data security
