Unsolicited Direct Mail Advertisement, commonly called "junk mail," is given discounted postage rates to advertisers. For years, statistics stated only 3% to 5% of Direct Mail resulted in business. (Even at 10% results, does that warrent the wasted paper and USPS manpower hours?)
Junk mail does not deserve postage discounts because it burdens the Postal Service, garbage collectors, and recycling businesses. Furthermore, it wastes trees, and the overwhelming majority of people do not want it in their mailboxes. (Each of these groups are financially burdened.)
Advertisers should pay more postage to use the Postal Service. Decrease their discounts. Ideally, phase out all their discounts. Taxpayers should not have to subsidize junk mail handling.
