Every day in the U.S. twenty-eight people die from DUI related accidents. One-third of DUI arrests are repeat offenders. Something must be done to stop the recidivism of DUI offenders and stop the unnecessary deaths of both offenders and innocent bystanders. Ignition Interlock Devices are breathalyzers installed in cars that would be installed after a first DUI offense, inhibiting repeat offenses.
Ignition Interlock Devices are required in many states after a first DUI offense but states do not follow through on installing them thus creating a key issue. An example, Robert Landis had 7 DUIs since 1981 until inevitably killing someone in 2013. Mothers Against Drunk Driving has been working to stop it and it is time for the federal government to step in before more innocent lives are lost.
