The student loan incurred in the study of Chinese medicine/acupuncture is exorbitant comparing with the level of income practitioners will reach in their most lucrative practices. All acupuncture student loan debt should be forgiven if not paid off after five years of graduation. Each year students graduate from acupuncture schools with thousands of dollars in debt. Much of it is incurred as government loans: Direct, Stafford, Perkins, Sallie Mae. The debt forces many to live paycheck to paycheck with inability to repay in many cases, ruining credit scores which is a drawback for future practice goals. Federal loan forgiveness will free practitioners to have careers in preventive medicine for the good of the public and make a reasonable standard of living for their families.
