The current economic climate and lack of jobs facing recent and past college graduates has made it impossible for those with large college debts to pay back their student loans. These debts unlike credit card debts can not be discharged in a bankruptcy. It makes no sense what so ever to allow someone who bought a car or house they couldn't afford on credit, or a business that couldn't balance the books, to be able to discharge their debt when an individual who was trying to improve their lot in life by getting an education in order to become a productive tax paying member of society can not.
