Student loan debtors who remain deeply in debt even 20 years after graduation face a bleak economic future. Those who have lost their jobs and/or can only find low-paying, even part-time work are for all practical purposes indentured servants. A 15% wage garnishment on a low wage makes working for a living (rent, food, housing, etc.) impossible. In 1998, Congress and the President "reformed" bankruptcy law so that discharging a student loan debt became essentially impossible. Prior to that "reform", if a person was granted Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and seven years had passed since graduation, the remaining portion of their student loan debt was forgiven. This avenue of getting a second chance at an economic future must be reopened and made retroactive.
