Currently student loans can be discharged for situations such as total disability, death, or under programs like the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program. However, when the student loans are discharged. the amount of the discharged loan is sometimes counted as income for that year. This can result in a huge amount of owed taxes. For individuals under the Teacher program this is forgiven and not counted as income but for our disabled veterans it is. This is very backwards. Those who are able to work are able to have it forgiven but those that have been deemed unable to work due to service-connected disability- that have been injured serving our country, are required to pay huge amounts during one of the most vulnerable points in their lives.
