Corn subsidies exceeded $81B in 2011, more than double the next closest commodity. The corn industry is heavily concentrated by a small group of privately held companies who control much of the end-to-end supply chain. This industry has been wildly successful in engineering corn into a huge range of products we consume (the cow meat we eat, snack foods, soda, etc.). Recent food science data is increasingly documenting the harm corn has on our bodies. Couple that with the significant amount of corn based consumption in the American diet and you can draw a direct line from government corn subsides to the health epidemic spreading in our country. For the health of our citizens, we need unbiased experts to study this issue and provide data based recommendations to our policy makers.
