The United States Government has never formally apologized for chattel slavery and it's complicity in the slave trade in America. Slavery's impact is still being felt through the generations of descendants of African Slaves. Simply put, a formal apology by the President of the United States and the Obama administration will begin a national conversation on these impacts and what next steps should be taken by members of the affected communities.
