A formal apology by our government will create a reference point from which our nation may truly begin to heal the horror of slavery, racism, and the effects of these in our society. Other governments have made such apologies, such as South Africa for apartheid, with success. While a formal apology will not end racism, nor change our history, it makes a firm, clear, public statement that we intend to put an end to the continuing problems of racism. Citizens who sign the petition can consider themselves joining in the apology, as well, since ours is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
