Taiwan is by every definition of the word, a sovereign state. Taiwan maintains its own system of government, constitution, rule of law, economy, currency, and defense. It has successfully developed its own thriving democracy; the only democracy in the Chinese speaking world. Its 23 million citizens live in a unique, progressive, tolerant society with a high standard of economic freedom, public education, health care, human development, and freedom of the press. Taiwan is a long friend of the United States. It is our important strategic ally and trading partner in East Asia.
Please formally recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state, open direct diplomatic relations, and welcome Taiwan's President-Elect, Tsai Ing-wen to the White House. Thank you!
