The rise in social media has been accompanied by the recent rise in mass shootings, and while correlation does not demand causation, drawing a connection is not too difficult. One who has reached the state of seeing nothing left to live for, rather than dying a nobody, sees the opportunity created by the media to be remembered not for contributions to society, but rather for a body count.
The First Amendment makes it unconsitutional to ban media outlets from publishing a perpetrator's name or face, however a non-binding presidential request to withhold such information is a step in the right direction. If the request is accompanied by a public refusal to watch reports including such information, the opportunity to become infamous through heinous acts diminishes.
