My wish is that you free Oscar Lopez Rivera; you are the only one in the world that can grant . I do not know what you technically, but I ask that in this coming year, 2014, you put the machinery to work and grant Oscar his freedom after 32 years of imprisonment.
Many have compared Sr. Lopez Rivera and Mandela – the imprisonment for “seditious conspiracy” for trying to overthrow a colonial government even though their actions were born out of love for their brethren; both served long sentences and both were tortured, unnecessarily from my perspective, as their commitments emerged from deeply felt convictions of social justice. Their actions remind me of Zapata’s words – “I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees.”
Please be known as a president with an open heart.
