Shaker Aamer was one of the first detainees to be sent to the notorious Guantánamo Bay detention centre in 2002. He’s also the last UK resident to remain there. Shaker is now 46 years old and has spent 13 gruelling years behind bars. Yet he has never been charged or tried with any crime.
Shaker was cleared for release from Guantánamo in 2007, which demonstrates that the US has no intention of bringing him to trial.
Despite authorities clearing him for release, and despite David Cameron personally asking Obama to return him to the UK, Shaker is still detained without charge – apparently indefinitely.
