Dr. Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA find Osama Bin Laden, has been convicted of treason by the Pakistani government and sentenced to 33 years in prison. The US government should use whatever means necessary to free Dr. Afridi for two reasons. First, since the US and Pakistan are allies in the war against terror, and the sham vaccination program run by Dr. Afridi helped locate Bin Laden, Dr Afridi committed no treason against Pakistan. Second, if the CIA wants to effectively recruit foreign intelligence assets in the future, it needs to demonstrate a willingness to protect those who have ably served the CIA, like Dr. Afridi.
