The United States needs to condem the Brazilian Senate' s decision to oust Rousseff – who was elected president to a second term with a popular mandate of 54 million votes in 2014. Rousseff's removal from office was a spurious process that failed to fulfill the constitutional requirement of proving that the president committed "crimes of responsibility" to justify impeachment. Acts by Rousseff do not meet the required standard for impeachment and are being used as an excuse for a coup of the democratically-elected president. The United States also cannot ignore the fact that many of the decisionmakers in Rousseff's impeachment are being investigated for serious acts of corruption.
