Sufficient evidence exists in the public record to implicate senior-level Bush administration officials in the implementation of a torture program that:
1) Was clearly criminal by domestic and international law.
2) Degraded the standing of the United States both at home and abroad.
3) By many expert accounts, was counterproductive toward gathering actionable intelligence.
4) Continues to be applauded by former Vice President Dick Cheney.
We are a country of laws. No person is above the law - including the President of the United States. The argument over the effectiveness of torture is irrelevant - torture is illegal, even if it is to "keep us safe."
The Justice Department should follow the evidence and prosecute those found responsible for creating the torture regime.
