Ethernet was invented in 1973 and is the basis of today's data networks. On one hand, the Net has come a long way. But on the other, there are still over 4 billion people on the planet that do not have regular access to broadband services.
The problem is that if Ethernet was a ten lane freeway, five lanes would always be closed when the network is busy. This is called overhead and it the amount of bandwidth needed to keep the network humming. So you might pay for a 10Mb link, but after overhead only 5Mb is actually usable.
