I believe that there are vast quantities of minerals on the moon, and taking them from the surface will give us an edge on space colonization. It would benefit the economy as well, because selling moon rock is already expensive. Think about how much selling thousands if not millions of pounds of iron over a month or two.
I recommend making a smaller space station orbiting the moon, and then colonize later. Then look for rich areas of minerals, perhaps with a probe, then land a "scout" that will house basic equipment, no mining. Then land a few other landers with places for living, and research, then send a few more with mining equipment. Perhaps we could make it a joint project with the other space centers. Also, look for some other fuel sources. We're low on oil as is.
