This petition is for the United States Congress to immediately fund a comprehensive visual archive of every gem and mineral at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History using ultra high resolution photography. We recommend a minimum requirement of a 50 megapixel CMOS sensor in a full frame DSLR. With this level of high resolution, each mineral specimen will be able to be examined with fine detail and precision. This will allow for in-depth understanding of the composition, character, and wonderful color each specimen possesses. This petition also demands that this visual archive is published on a Smithsonian website with easy access. This effort represents the most cost effective methods to share this nation’s natural wonders. The citizens deserve visual access to this treasure.
