A manned mission to Mars is essential to catch the interest of the next generation of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. STEM workers are an essential ingredient of a competitive US economy. In addition all of the research and technology necessary to safely reach Mars is already or available. The Space Launch System will finish completion within the next 3-4 years, and can easily reach Mars. All the pieces are here they just need a direction.
