Poverty reports in 2013 showed that 14.5% of women were living under the poverty line compared to 11% of men. Several factors contribute to this uneven breakdown including women’s segregation into low-income jobs, costs of raising children for single mothers and domestic violence against women.
The government must change its approach to target women in poverty because years of discrimination have left women at a disadvantage.
In today’s highly competitive world mere welfare programs are not enough to raise women out of poverty. Therefore, it is necessary for the government to provide funding for community mentoring programs that assist women with networking, basic education on money management and personal development.
Let’s prepare women for a world that awaits them outside of poverty!
