As dramatically demonstrated by the February 15th asteroid impact in Tunguska, Russia, Earth is still vulnerable to dangerous collisions with asteroids and other space objects. The top astrophysicists know it and have been warning us for years. Taking the lead in space again would be a point of national pride and inspiration for America as a whole, and this would be a practical, yet bold, first step. Taking the lead in planetary defense may be more beneficial, especially considering our beloved United States is one of the few nations that has the capability to do this.
