This petition requests that the Obama administration immediately grant funding for NASA to create a second Kepler Space Telescope to continue to the search for extrasolar planets. The estimated cost of the original Kepler Space Telescope was $550 million. On May 11, 2013, the second of four reaction wheels on the current Kepler Space Telescope failed, severely limiting the telescopes ability to accomplish its primary goal. Due to the relatively low cost and high success of the original mission, signers of this petition feel that it would be a worthwhile investment of taxpayer dollars to launch a new mission and continue this research. The discovery of a multitude of extrasolar planets has peaked the interest of millions of American children in space and technology.
