To help prevent another Newtown, Connecticut tragedy, we need to have 3-4, full-time cognitive therapists on staff in every middle and high school in the country. Guidance counselors and school psychologists are overwhelmed by the day-to-day and cannot provide regular therapeutic visits for the students that need them. We need to cast a larger net and make mental health care free, readily available, and convenient for all young people in the United States. Most mental illness manifests itself in the teen years. Focusing real resources on providing mental health care to this group could go a long way to preventing another Virginia Tech, Aurora, Colorado, Columbine, or Sandy Hook.
