The Alcubierre drive, aka warp drive, is a speculative method of faster than light travel in which the space behind a craft is expanded while the space in front of it is contracted. The concept was proposed by physicist Miguel Alcubierre, and while the idea is mathematically sound, the few experiments into its practicality have been inconclusive.
Most people think of faster than light travel as pure science fiction, however we must ask ourselves, if we do not begin research into such things today,when will we? As of 2014 only .5% of the federal budget went to the space program. Certainly,it can not be too much to ask to divert another .5% or so from various other programs for the specific purpose of research and development into the alcubierre, and/or other methods of interstellar travel.
