Fund R&D of Inherently Safe Molten Salt Reactors using Thorium Fuel

Created by B.W. on September 18, 2012

By investing in the Molten Salt Reactor (MSR), the U.S. can produce safe, abundant, carbon-free energy at comparable costs, while producing much needed medical radioisotopes like Molybdenum-99 without using Highly Enriched Uranium.

Advantages of the MSR:

-The MSR can transmute Thorium into the most fissile Uranium: U-233, without using enriched uranium

-Its fuel mixture operates at atmospheric pressure, eliminating the need for large and dangerous pressure vessels

-The negative temperature coefficient of reactivity of the molten salt means the hotter it gets, the less reactive the nuclear reaction. It is self-correcting.

-Many fission products such as Molybdenum and Cesium, can be easily removed from the fuel salt.

-Waste is proliferation resistant, and lasts a fraction of the time
