Restore funding for the CDC's National Center for Injury Control, which was cut off in the mid-1990s under pressure from the National Rifle Association, so that it may do rigorous research on how firearms affect public health. Solid data will eliminate speculation from both sides on such questions as: Are communities where more people carry guns safer? Do background checks make a difference? Does the availability of high-capacity magazines increase deaths? Lawmakers need more research on these critical questions before they can make policy that will safeguard the public.
