When you look at the example of Medicare vs private healthcare providing corporations, Medicare is VASTLY more efficient in how it spends money. The private provders spend nearly 30 cents of every dollar on administrative costs and upper-management bonuses. Medicare spends less than a nickel for the same activities, minus the bonuses. So I propose that, while we wait for fuel efficiency standards to rise and more affordable efficient cars enter the market, the US Government should make an effort to buy existing or build new petroleum refineries and feed a larger supply of fuel into the marketplace. This would immediately drive fuel prices down dramatically. The program wouldn't be profit-driven. No bonuses paid to CEOs. Oil companies would be forced to lower their prices to compete.
