1 out of every 2,229 babies will be born with Gastroschisis (intestines outside of the stomach). The statistics are on the rise by more than doubling in recent years, and the cause still remains unknown.
These babies come into the world fighting for their lives with surgery upon birth, and a long stay away from their mothers until "adequate" recovery. Some babies return home after 3 weeks perfectly fine, others have to wait 3 months with permanent attached IV lines...and then there's the angel babies who don't survive. You never know which scenario you're going to get, because it's "impossible" to tell. The growing Gastroschisis community deserves answers.
