Energy independence is America's new Apollo mission.
The United States is the world leader in geothermal generation, with approximately 3,100 MW online. And a new map from Southern Methodist University's Geothermal Lab, created with help from a grant from Google's philanthropic arm Google.org, estimates the U.S. could potentially generate nearly three million megawatts using the Earth's heat, or about ten times the installed capacity of coal power.
Geothermal is safe. We know how to use it to heat our homes & power steam turbines to create electricity.
America needs to engage with the booming geothermal energy industry to extend geothermal tax incentives to 2016, to encourage workers to join the industry, and to accelerate project time-lines with innovative federal and state policy.
