With an astonishing 40 percent of the nation’s corn crop now going to ethanol production, tax payers are not only subsidizing the ethanol industry, but getting hit at the grocery store.
The use of food and feed corn for ethanol has not only driven up the cost of corn, but many other items on the shelf that use corn products.
In addition, Washington’s political thirst for ethanol has caused farmers to convert 1.3 million acres of grassland into farms between 2006 and 2011.
That’s the highest loss of prairie land since the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Production of corn ethanol is also a huge drag on our water supplies.
And, last but not least, ethanol reduces the miles per gallon of our gasoline vehicles.
