Many families earning up to $100K a year are being hit with a huge tax bill in 2013 due to the alternative minimum tax. Even when withholding at the higher single rate it is insufficient to cover the costs of the AMT. Protection of the middle class is imperative. The AMT hurts primarily middle class workers who should not have to pay more taxes. $100K a year is not a lot of money when you factor in student loans (deductions do not cover entire interest), mortgage payments and the regular costs of living into the equation. Families earning $100K a year usually have advanced degrees and shouldn't be penalized for attending college with loans.
